Consciousness: A Scientific View

Untitled-2
Consciousness refers to the individual awareness of your mental processes like thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations and environment. It is possible that we are the only beings on this planet that have this type of self-awareness or level of consciousness and the ability to introspect, or look inward and examine these processes. For example, if you are angry, you can try to understand your anger, why you are angry? What that anger feels like? But can a dog do the same?
Your conscious experiences are constantly shifting and changing. For example, in one moment you may be focused on reading this article. Your consciousness may then shift to the memory of a conversation you had earlier with a co-worker. Next, you might notice how uncomfortable your chair is or maybe you are mentally planning dinner. This ever-shifting stream of thoughts can change dramatically from one moment to the next, but your experience of it seems smooth and effortless. Every day, from minute to minute and hour to hour, our consciousness moves through many different levels of wakefulness.
